(Cinnamomum verum)

What is Cinnamon?

Cinnamon is one of the world’s oldest spices, obtained from the inner bark of the cinnamon tree (Cinnamomum verum or Cinnamomum cassia). Its use dates back to civilizations such as the Egyptians, who used it in rituals and embalming processes, as well as in cooking. Coming mainly from Sri Lanka, India, and China, this spice conquered Europe in the Middle Ages, when it was considered a luxury product as valuable as gold.

With its sweet, warm aroma, cinnamon has gone beyond gastronomy to become a common ingredient in natural remedies and medicinal rituals of Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine. Today, we find it both in sticks and ground, and it’s one of the most versatile spices in the pantry.
