Ponche, a cocktail with a lot of history
We continue with our passion this summer: cocktails made with tea, rooibos or infusions.
Today we are going to talk about Ponche, an ideal drink for parties and gatherings with friends and family during the vacations, as it can be prepared in advance and its ingredients are easy to mix in large quantities.
A bit of history
Mysteries, inventions and many fables tell us about the origin of this cocktail. The most popular one dates back to 1552, when English sailors of the British Navy mixed rum and sugar. Proud of this delicious combination, once their ship docked in India, they began to mix it with fruits and spices from the region. They finally found the perfect combination which they would call "punch", a name that comes from "pãč", which means 5 in Hindi. These 5 ingredients were: rum, sugar, fruit juice, cinnamon and tea.
It is these same sailors who took the name and recipe to the West Indies, where the recipe was quickly adopted and became a traditional drink, creating delicious variations thanks to its variety of exotic fruits. Later, North Americans developed their own production from molasses.
