The health benefits of Maté
Mate (maté), also known as yerba mate, is a traditional South American herbal tea made from the leaves of a small tree native to the Paraná River basin and the area of the Paraguay River.
Very appreciated for its taste and invigorating properties, it is one of the most consumed beverages in South America, especially in Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina, where many consider it a national drink.
Let’s learn more about the properties and health benefits of mate!
Maté health benefits: regain energy and take care of yourself with mate!
Mate has been consumed since time immemorial by native peoples of South America for its stimulating properties.
However, its production started developing in the 16th century, promoted by the Jesuit missionaries who were interested in its nutritional value and in its medicinal properties.
The most common way to consume maté is by preparing it in the typical container of the same name.
The dried leaves of maté are placed on one side of the container (gourd), while hot water is gradually poured onto the leaves.
The drink is then sipped through the metal straw of the container.
Another type of Maté, Maté cocido, is a preparation of dried leaves ready to be brewed, just like tea.
It is generally sold in tea bags, although it may be found loose.

Here are some properties of a plant with great antioxidant, revitalizing and anti-fatigue effects, which it owes to its caffeine content and its richness in vitamins A, B, C, and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, manganese, potassium and zinc.
- Maté is an energizing and invigorating beverage.
A natural energy booster, it helps fight tiredness due to its high content of caffeine, which represents around 1% of the plant compounds – less than in coffee, but more than in black tea.
It is highly recommended in case of intense physical or mental activity, due to its ability to stimulate brain functions.
- Its high amount of polyphenols makes mate a rich source of antioxidants, which fight the action of free radicals and prevent cell damage, thus protecting the heart and arteries.
Maté also promotes blood flow, helps prevent cardiovascular diseases, protects the liver and contributes to lowering cholesterol and triglyceride levels.
- Likewise, the antioxidant properties of maté promote a healthy skin and help prevent premature aging and wrinkles.
- Due to its caffeine content, it also has diuretic and laxative effects, and is often recommended to complement a diet or to prevent weight gain.
- Mate has anti-inflammatory properties and is also used to relieve headaches, rheumatic pain and arthritis.
Possible side effects
All medicinal plants may cause herb-drug interactions.
You should always consult with your doctor before consuming plants if you take drugs or supplements, or if you have any doubts about possible drug interactions or side effects.
Due to its high content in caffeine, mate should not be taken in case of a heart condition, insomnia, anxiety and kidney disorders.
Some studies have shown that large doses of liquorice root may cause a high blood pressure (hypertension) and may affect kidney function.
Caffeine is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and should not be consumed by children.
When in doubt, consult with your doctor or a health professional.
