Infusiones durante el embarazo

Infusions during pregnancy

Teas and herbal teas are staple drinks in our daily lives, and being pregnant shouldn't deprive us of this much loved pleasure. Herbal teas aren't off-limits during pregnancy, but it is essential to know exactly what’s in them as certain ingredients aren’t recommended.

WHAT HERBAL TEAS CAN YOU DRINK DURING PREGNANCY?

One of the most frequently asked questions during pregnancy is what herbal teas you can drink. Luckily, there are a wide variety of options, but it's always a good idea to check with your doctor to be aware of any contraindications.

Thyme

This is one of the best herbal teas for pregnant women. It provides a natural dose of antioxidants and vitamins. It's also a decongestant that could save you from having to take medication for sinusitis or other nasal conditions.

Mint or ginger

These infusions for pregnant women are perfect for the first trimester. Their properties prevent the onset of nausea, soothe stomach pains, and help whet the appetite.

Peppermint, one of the best herbal teas during pregnancy

Another great option. In this case, it helps to relieve headaches in a natural way. Headaches are all too common in the first few months of pregnancy and this natural remedy can be a great ally.

Passionflower or orange blossom

These infusions are permitted during pregnancy and will help us to relax and rest better. They're especially useful during the final months of pregnancy, when everything gets a bit more uncomfortable. Thanks to their active ingredients, they’re a great aid in helping you fall asleep.

Rooibos, green tea and white tea

Drinking rooibos tea during pregnancy helps provide natural antioxidants that strengthen the body's defences. This variant naturally boosts the immune system. Another great option, as it also contains antioxidants that are beneficial during pregnancy.

WHICH HERBAL TEAS TO AVOID DURING PREGNANCY

Some of the plants and leaves used for herbal teas have properties that may be unsafe during pregnancy. It is essential to be aware of the different components and, if in doubt, consult a specialist.

There are a large number of ingredients not recommended during pregnancy, although they can be taken occasionally with medical consent. Among these herbs is pennyroyal mint, which contains a monoterpene that can lead to malformations. Other ingredients not recommended include cornflower, cardamom, clove, safflower, verbena, lemon verbena, fennel, raspberry leaves, lavender, lemongrass, chamomile and sage.

On the other hand, some herbal teas are strictly forbidden in pregnancy and should be avoided at all costs, such as those containing chicory, aloe vera, star anise and green anise, marigold, cinnamon, turmeric, juniper, ginseng, hibiscus, lapacho, lemon balm, liquorice, rosemary and valerian. This is because they have abortifacient properties that should be avoided at all times. They also contain certain toxins that our body filters naturally, but which can be harmful when carried to the foetus through the placenta. Black and red teas are also unsuitable at this stage.

BENEFITS OF DRINKING HERBAL TEA DURING PREGNANCY

Staying properly hydrated during pregnancy is essential and the importance of drinking water can’t be underestimated. Thankfully, drinking teas and herbal teas are a natural way to do exactly that.

The most important thing to remember, and the best way to benefit from their properties, is to keep an eye on their ingredients and consume them in moderation.

Here are some tips to keep in mind to get the most out of them:

• 4 or 5 herbal teas a week is the maximum, and no more than two a day.

• Avoid caffeine, as it's a natural stimulant and not recommended during pregnancy.

Go for decaffeinated options.

• Vary between different herbal teas to ensure a good range of properties.

To enjoy herbal teas during pregnancy, understanding which ones are permitted and knowing the exact ingredients they contain are crucial. It's always best to ask if you have any doubts. At Tea Shop, we make sure you always know exactly what ingredients make up each of our herbal teas, and we’d be delighted to help you out with any questions.
